Legend has it that in the past there was an elephant pass in this place and elephants used to roam here and one day an elephant fell down the waterfall and died and the place got the name Ethamala Falls.

This waterfall falls down into two parts and the water from the upper part falls down and the water flows freely downwards creating a second waterfall. In the second part, the water falls down and forms a large pool. This is used by tourists and villagers as a natural swimming pool and many endemic fish can be seen around the falls.

It can be called a beautiful waterfall that is not very high. You also need to be reminded that bathing here is not a good place.



Athamala Falls is formed by the Nilwala River and is known as the only waterfall in the Nilwala River. This is also known as Pahuruthota Falls. At a height of about 52m with the waters of the Nilwala River, this beautiful waterfall is a marvel of nature. This beautiful waterfall is not a good place to bathe.

This Athamala Falls can be found a short distance down the road to the right near the Nil Ella Estate which is found while passing Pitabeddara on Deniyaya Road.
